This square-cut ring is supplied in AS568-102 black Viton® (FKM) 70 Shore A measuring an inside diameter of 0.049 in (1.24 mm), a cross section of 0.103 in (2.62 mm), and an outside diameter of 0.255 in (6.48 mm), catalogued under part number SV70102. It resists the spiral failure that affects round rings on long reciprocating strokes.

The compound resists aggressive chemicals, chlorinated solvents, and engine and transmission fluids. Viton® (FKM) is widely chosen for long service life in hot, chemically aggressive environments and the industry benchmark where nitrile reaches its thermal limit. Rated temperature range runs from -15°F (-26.1°C) to 400°F (204.4°C) in continuous service. It is not the right choice where low-molecular-weight organic acids or ketones and esters are present. The profile itself contributes a rectangular section that will not roll in the groove and simple lathe-cut manufacture at low tooling cost. Note that a square section is less suited to high-speed rotary service, where the larger contact area raises friction and heat.
