A square-cut ring resists the spiral failure that affects round rings on long reciprocating strokes.

As a material, Viton® (FKM) is known for long service life in hot, chemically aggressive environments and outstanding high-temperature capability. Expect good resistance to chlorinated solvents, many acids, and aromatic hydrocarbons. Rated temperature range runs from -15°F (-26.1°C) to 400°F (204.4°C) in continuous service. The profile itself contributes simple lathe-cut manufacture at low tooling cost and a flat contact band that spreads sealing load across a wider area. Note that a square section is less suited to high-speed rotary service, where the larger contact area raises friction and heat.
