An o-ring seats in a machined groove and forms a leak-tight barrier when compressed between two mating surfaces.

Viton® (FKM) is specified here for industry benchmark where nitrile reaches its thermal limit and very low compression set at elevated temperature. This material stands up to engine and transmission fluids, aggressive chemicals, and many acids. Continuous operating temperature is published at -15°F (-26.1°C) to 400°F (204.4°C). It should not be specified for service in amines or hot water and steam.

It sees regular use in high-temperature process equipment, chemical processing, and semiconductor equipment.
