An o-ring provides a reliable static or dynamic seal by deforming into its gland under assembly load.

Viton® (FKM) is specified here for excellent resistance to compression set and permeation, industry benchmark where nitrile reaches its thermal limit. The compound resists many acids, petroleum oils and fuels, and chlorinated solvents. Continuous operating temperature is published at -15°F (-26.1°C) to 400°F (204.4°C). Applications involving ketones and esters or amines call for a different compound.
