HQ4238 is an AS568-238 black Buna-N (Nitrile) 70 Shore A quad profile Quad-Ring built to an inside diameter of 3.484 in (88.49 mm), a cross section of 0.139 in (3.53 mm), and an outside diameter of 3.762 in (95.55 mm). In service, this quad-ring provides a dual sealing band on each contact face for improved reliability.

The compound resists hydraulic fluids, propane and butane, and greases and lubricants. Buna-N (Nitrile) is known for the most widely specified general-purpose sealing elastomer and an economical choice for high-volume maintenance programs. Continuous operating temperature is published at -40°F (-40°C) to 250°F (121.1°C). Applications involving strong acids or automotive brake fluid call for a different compound.
