It delivers lower friction and better sealing stability than a comparable round-section o-ring.

As a material, Buna-N (Nitrile) delivers reliable performance in both static and dynamic service, strong abrasion and tear resistance. This material stands up to propane and butane, water, and many alcohols. Published continuous service range is -40°F (-40°C) to 250°F (121.1°C). It should not be specified for service in ketones or strong acids. The profile itself contributes a parting line located away from the sealing surface and two sealing bands per contact face rather than one.
