An o-ring provides a reliable static or dynamic seal by deforming into its gland under assembly load.

The material holds up against ozone and UV exposure, extreme heat and cold, and dry heat. Silicone is widely chosen for very good compression set resistance across its range and excellent electrical insulating properties. Published continuous service range is -80°F (-62.2°C) to 450°F (232.2°C). It is not the right choice where concentrated acids or hydrocarbon fuels and oils are present.
